Why hands, feet, and nails change during treatment — Certain types of chemotherapy can cause hand-foot syndrome (palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia) – redness, tingling, burning, or even pain in the palms and soles, which can progress to cracking or peeling of the skin. Nails often become more brittle and fragile, may change color, and in more severe cases can even separate from the nail bed (onycholysis).
