Intimate dryness and irritation: what helps during cancer treatment and menopause

Why intimate dryness happens - not only during cancer treatment

Both chemotherapy and hormone therapy (such as tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors used in breast cancer treatment) can lower estrogen levels in the body. Estrogen keeps the vaginal mucosa elastic, well supplied with blood and adequately moisturized. When levels drop, the mucosa thins and dries out, leading to dryness, itching, burning or pain - sometimes even outside of intercourse.

Many completely healthy women experience the same issues - typically during and after menopause, when estrogen levels naturally and permanently decline. This is medically known as genitourinary syndrome of menopause and is estimated to affect up to half of postmenopausal women. Similar discomfort can also occur in breastfeeding women or those using low-dose hormonal contraception. Gentle, hydrating care therefore makes sense not only during cancer treatment, but also simply with age.

These issues aren't just uncomfortable - they also raise the risk of irritation and infection, since weakened mucosa is less able to withstand daily stress. It's a very common, if rarely discussed, problem, and it's well worth addressing early, whether it's related to treatment or natural aging.

How to ease intimate dryness and irritation

Choose cotton underwear rather than synthetic materials, and avoid tight-fitting clothing, which irritates the area and reduces airflow.

Skip harsh soaps and shower gels. Standard fragranced cosmetics and alcohol-based products disrupt the natural pH and microbiome of the intimate area and make dryness worse.

Look for pH-balanced products designed specifically for intimate hygiene, ideally free of fragrance and dyes.

Avoid petroleum jelly or oil-based ointments as a substitute for hydration - they can irritate the mucosa and aren't suitable for this purpose.

Talk to your doctor. Your gynecologist or oncologist may recommend prescription-strength local treatments if at-home care isn't enough.

When to see a doctor

If you experience severe pain, bleeding, recurring infections, or symptoms that persist despite regular care, let your gynecologist or oncologist know. Oncos dermocosmetics are a helpful addition to daily care, but they don't replace a proper medical examination or treatment.
